Smash cocktails are based in fresh fruit and herbs. This cocktail's great because it can be made year round and manages to taste like Spring, no matter what time of year you're serving it.
- 1.5 oz bourbon
- 1/2 oz lemon juice
- 1/2 oz blackberry shrub*
- 3/4 oz 1:1 honey-sage syrup**
- 2 dashes angostura bitters
- extra fresh sage or lemon peel for garnish
Place all the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice. Shake well and double-strain into a cocktail glass (with or without ice). Garnish with a small bunch of fresh sage or a slice of lemon peel.
*Blackberry shrub: Boil 2 parts blackberries with 1 part water. Cool, strain, and add a 3 dashes of blasamic vinegar for every 1/2 cup of syrup
**Honey syrup: heat equal parts honey and water in a saucepan until they are easily stirred and blended. Add a very large handful of fresh sage and steep for about 10 minutes. Strain out the sage and allow syrup to cool.
